Hua Hin Airport Upgrade: Preparing for International Flights
Hua Hin Airport has entered a new phase of development with major construction works now underway. The long-term upgrade aims to prepare the airport for international flights, supporting Hua Hin’s role as a growing destination for both domestic and global travelers.
Major Construction Works Around Hua Hin Airport
The project officially began on 31 August and is scheduled to continue until 23 August 2026. The improvements include:
- Expanding the vehicle tunnel by up to 41.5 metres
- Extending the railway tunnel by up to 38.5 metres
- Upgrading runway safety areas to meet international aviation standards
According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT), these upgrades are essential for the airport to handle larger aircraft and ensure higher levels of safety.
Traffic Diversions for Motorists
With roadworks in progress, drivers should be aware of temporary diversions:
- Those travelling towards Hua Hin should use the detour from Km 208+500 near Palm Hills to Km 201+500 at Hua Hin Soi 2.
- Motorists heading towards Bangkok or southern Thailand are advised to take Bypass Road 37 or the Hua Hin Soi 2 detour.
Boosting Tourism and Local Economy
The Hua Hin Airport expansion is expected to transform the region into a more accessible tourist destination, helping boost the local economy and connect Hua Hin with international markets.
At present, AirAsia operates domestic flights to Chiang Mai. However, former international routes, such as Hua Hin–Kuala Lumpur, have been suspended. Passenger traffic has also fluctuated: in 2019, the airport served over 80,000 passengers, compared with just 27,000 in the first half of this year.
Development Plans and Local Involvement
To support the project, a 25-member development committee has been established, led by Sarawut Lim-arunrak, President of the Prachuap Khiri Khan Provincial Administrative Organisation. The committee includes representatives from local government, business, and tourism groups, all working towards creating a “living airport” with better services and visitor-friendly facilities.
Challenges and Certification for Larger Aircraft
While the airport upgrade is a positive step, concerns remain over traffic congestion and local infrastructure, which could limit long-term growth.
On the technical side, the runway has already been expanded to 45 metres, and inspections by CAAT and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) are underway. Once certified, Hua Hin Airport will be able to handle larger international aircraft, including the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320.
✅ With these upgrades, Hua Hin Airport is positioning itself as a future international gateway for Thailand’s popular beach resort town — a move that could reshape travel and tourism in the region.
