BANGKOK — August 2025. Thailand has officially tightened its SIM card registration rules. From now on, anyone purchasing a new mobile number will be required to undergo biometric verification — a move that the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) says is aimed at curbing fraud and protecting consumers.
A Shift Toward Digital Security
Until now, registering a SIM card in Thailand only required showing a valid ID or passport. But with growing concerns over online scams, identity theft, and phone-based fraud, regulators have decided that stricter measures are necessary.
“Biometric verification ensures that every SIM card is linked to a real, verifiable person,” an NBTC spokesperson said. “This step is crucial to safeguard users and restore trust in digital transactions.”
How It Works
- Thai citizens will use their national ID card along with a fingerprint or facial scan.
- Foreign nationals must present their passport and complete the same biometric process.
- The system verifies the data in real time, directly linked to the NBTC database.
The new rules apply to all prepaid and postpaid SIM cards, and existing subscribers may also be asked to update their registration within a set period.
